I have the latest Windows Toolbar version (14.00.8064.0206) but as you can see in the screenshot below, the Sync your favorites option is not available anymore in the left menu, and a few days ago it was (it should be the third item in the left menu)!

I have Windows Vista, and didn’t run any updates lately. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Windows Live Toolbar, restating the computer, I have temporarily removed the SkyDrive button, and I have also checked with two separate Windows user accounts (on the same computer) to see if it was nothing broken within the Windows profile settings, but in all cases the option is still missing.

On a different PC (with Windows XP) the option is available (it is the third option in the left menu):

Maybe this is a local issue (only on my computer, or only for this geographical region), or maybe this is “by design” (such as Windows Live Favorites synchronization is not supported in Vista anymore, or there is a bug with it?) but anyway, I wanted to let you know about it so if you see the same behavior in your case, you would know you are not alone. Hopefully this problem will be resolved automatically (just as it appeared) maybe with a next update or when Microsoft would restart a server that the client software needs. I’ll let you know if this happens with an update to this blog entry.

Update: I reported the issue to Microsoft using the Windows Live feedback form, and now (after just a few hours) everything works fine again.

I must admit that during the last few years (as I was always very busy working in this period) I haven’t have the time to follow the recent advances in physics and astronomy (as I used to do in the past, reading related news and articles). But I got back to such issues as a few days ago when I watched a nice show on Discovery Channel regaring the Hubble Telescope and its close end of life time. Beside other interesting things, they have also presented information about the dark energy and about some other universe related concepts, that immediately gained back my interest. I warned myself: it seems I have been missing important discoveries lately!

And therefore, I was eager to find out more about these recent scientific discoveries and the theories proposed behind them. I have read some articles on the Web, such as items in Britannica, Encarta (available only until Oct. 31), and Wikipedia encylopedias, but I became a little sad afterwards because it’s clear now: our current understanding of physics is still so limited and not close at all to a unified theory about everything in the universe!

It seems that dark enegery makes our universe expand faster than expected, and therefore the universe will probably expand forever, to an infinite volume, decreasing matter density. All particles will finally get to their end because all links between them would be destroyed. The end of the universe will therefore be not the big crunch, but a maximum possible entropy level.

Of course, these recent discoveries are one step closer to the truth, but they are also a warning to us: we will never be sure of a unified theory, even if we find it. Maybe such a theory exists, but people couldn’t ever be sure about it, as we all live inside the universe itself and we can do only a finite number of internal, “local to our existence” tests. Each such successful test would confirm the theory but will never prove it, as any future failed test would negate the theory for good.

Anyway, based on the new information, I think that the general relativity theory may be only a subset or approximation of the unified theory that we are searching for, just as Newton’s gravity law was only an approximation of Einstein’s general relativity. I also think that eventually no cosmological constant would be needed in the universe model, and further more, I think Stephen Hawking’s idea of a universe model that doesn’t require a creator (having the big bang, black holes, and/or the maximum possible entropy level as natural states of the space-time, and not exceptional events) is still on and acceptable. But I’ll let the sciencist do their jobs and confirm or infirm my guess! (Hopefully I would have more time to follow them in the future!)

Yesterday evening I watched an interesting magazine on the National Geographic TV channel about strange animal sex life and the war of sexes. The number 1 of the top 10 was a lizard, which doesn’t have a male anymore, they’re all females now, although million of years ago males did exist.

Îmi plac, se pare, cărțile Biblioteca Adevărul (cel puțin unele dintre ele: până acum favorita mea este Accidentul – Orașul cu salcâmi de Mihail Sebastian). Dar merită să le ai pe toate în bibliotecă. Se pot comanda online, vin prin poștă în câteva săptămâni.

Există și colecția paralelă de la Jurnalul Național (pentru cine dorește numai cărți românești), dar eu cred că prima (colecția Biblioteca Adevărul) este de valoare mai mare, din punct de vedere cultural (la nivel global).

Microsoft announced a few months ago that it will discontinue its Encarta software, including its online resources (MSN-based Web site). The official reason for this operation seems to be that users do not use the traditional way (i.e. a well trusted, official encyclopedia, like Encarta was) to search for information, they instead rely on search engines and resources like the publicly editable Wikipedia online encyclopedia (although Microsoft doesn’t mention it directly I personally feel that’s the one they’re implying).

I know that Wikipedia articles and their content can be discussed/debated and therefore articles are usually accurate, but there are many times when (and I found myself looking at such articles too often):

• Wikipedia articles aren’t complete (of course sometimes Encarta haven’t even had articles on many topics that Wikipedia has, so this may be considered as an advantage; but it’s really frustrating to read only one paragraph or so regarding something, a paragraph that usually adds nothing to what you already know about the searched topic; it would have been better to just not find anything about it);
• Wikipedia articles aren’t accurate (Encarta used experts in many areas to make sure their articles are technically and/or scientifically accurate); many times you could get wrong information about some topics you knew everything about, and until the discussion/debate decided about whether it may be too late for somebody else who would simply trust the source without waiting;
• Wikipedia articles aren’t gramatically correct, or have technical mistakes: many times you can find duplicate paragraphs, incomplete sentences, broken text blocks, or even wrong characters used inside text.

Because of all these, I was hoping that Encarta will NOT die. But unfortunately I cannot do much to help: Microsoft already decided its future and it’s not pink. So let’s move on, and maybe the next good thing is to participate more in Wikipedia (or a different publicly editable encyclopedia), so that articles become as complete, accurate, and correct as possible.

If you were to replace Encarta online with a different (but also free) online encyclopedia, what would be your choice? Would it be Wikipedia or do you have an alternative? Maybe a more trustable one? Thanks in advance for your answer!

A few people have previously added “Thank you” comments on my technical blog entries, such as this one. So I just wanted to answer:

You're welcome everyone. I too lose time finding how to resolve things like this, and that's why I think it does worth to spend a few minutes more and write the solution down so that others, hopefully, don't lose as much time as I did. And this giving returns back to me because many times I resolve things easily and in a short time by finiding a similar post of somebody else (maybe you!) for a different issue I have.

It's a great thing that programmers (but probably other professionals too) can use their own blogs (and, of course, search engines like Bing.com for finding information) as a large community-sized knowledge base for everything related to their job. The important thing, however, is to use the best keywords in the post title to help search engines and therefore the searchers find the post easily. I'm optimistic about the future of this Web 2.0 general knowledge base, as it may become a better or at least a complement help resource than offline media (like the original MSDN documentation) could ever be (even if allows posting online comments). Just like Wikipedia seems to win in front of Microsoft Encarta (I am sure you heard, Microsoft is closing Encarta later this year, although I would have hoped that Encarta would live in parallel, with its online comments/additions/corrections which was a recently added feature…)

Pentru că n-am găsit căutând pe Internet (Autogari.ro, Bing, Google) iată mai jos o legătură cu microbuzul (personal am călătorit sâmbăta, dar cel mai probabil orarul este similar și în celelalte zile ale săptămânii, cel puțin de luni până vineri):

Dacă vizitați Sovata nu ezitați să luați masa la restaurantul hotelului Danubius (4 stele). Prețurile sunt asemenea tuturor teraselor din zonă, însă mâncarea este de două ori mai bună! Vă recomand medalionul de rață (cu crochete de cartofi, mere coapte și vișine), este excepțional, după părerea mea rața este pregătită mult mai bine chiar și decât în Paris (cel puțin comparativ cu un restaurant din centrul capitalei, unde am gustat eu un fel similar)!

În plus, pe terasele din jur chelnerii nu sunt atât de zâmbitori ca la hotel, prețurile pot fi chiar mai mari, gramajul gustării mai mic, iar gustul prea dulce sau prea sărat, pe când la hotel aproape toate felurile de mâncare sunt foarte bune, chiar deosebite (am încercat diverse, în mai multe sesiuni de bufet suedez).

Dacă doriți să vizitați salina Praid (în apropiere de Sovata), iată coordonatele GPS ale stației de autobuz (singurele mijloace de transport pe care le puteți folosi pentru intrare, având în vedere distanța la care se află crama în interiorul dealului de sare: cca 1,2 km):

Sper să fie de folos cuiva (mai ales că eu nu le găsisem pe Internet înainte).

PS: După revenirea din salină, dacă aveți nevoie de autobuz pentru Sovata, așteptați în stația aflată pe cealaltă parte a drumului național, mai sus cu aprox. 450 m.

Dacă vreodată vreți să vizitați stațiunea Sovata (jud. Mureș, România) și sosiți cu trenul, iată ce trebuie să știți: înainte de a ieși la strada principală (cca 50 de metri mai sus de gară), notați-vă numerele de taxi afișate în stația de cale ferată (pentru că aveți nevoie de taxi pentru a ajunge în Sovata Băi).

We visited Sovata these days, and although there were some roads closed for repairs and therefore some dust raising in some parts of it, the town and especially its spa resorts do worth visiting! I think there are some treatment offers there too, but I don’t know about them much as we didn’t need them.

Actualizare: De asemenea, am văzut ulterior în centrul orașului (dar n-am fotografiat, din păcate) un magazin (plin de copii) pe care era scris mare: MAGAZIN DE JUCĂRIE. Oare magazinul întreg era o jucărie? Am râs în hohote, pe stradă, ca un nebun. 

Ieri am parcurs distanța dintre Cluj-Napoca și Sovata cu trenul (schimbări în Blaj și Târnăveni). Am mers atât cu CFR Călători (până la Blaj) și cu un alt operator, RegioTrans (de la Blaj). Între Târnăveni și Sovata, trenul a oprit și în stația Bălăușeri. Acolo ne-am intersectat traseul cu un tren care venea din sens opus, era deja în stație pe o linie alăturată. Din stație se vedea și o barieră la aproximativ 300 de metri, în față, la trecerea la nivel cu calea ferată a drumului european E60.

Acum să vedeți fază: Impegatul de la Bălăușeri a venit și a ridicat paleta verde pentru ca celălalt tren să plece. Apoi și-a lăsat un caiet jos pe peron (nu mai era nimeni în stație, probabil că s-a gândit că nu i-l fură nimeni!) și imediat a luat-o la fugă până la barieră, parcă era la concurs! Acolo a lăsat manual jos bariera pentru ca să oprească mașinile, apoi (de acolo) a ridicat paleta și pentru trenul nostru! Trenul a plecat și am trecut pe lângă impegatul transpirat (!) care urma să meargă 300 de metri înapoi, până la stație.

Așa ceva nu am mai văzut nicăieri! Oare așa greu e să se automatizeze bariera? (Sau o fi fost defect mecanismul și încă n-a fost reparat?) Oricum, reprezentația cu fuga a fost dată pentru toți călătorii din tren, spre distracția tuturor. Mă întreb ce se întâmpla dacă bariera era la vreun kilometru-doi, tot așa se rezolva?! :-)

PS: Majoritatea stațiilor de cale ferată (administrate de RegioTrans) de pe parcurs par jalnice. Unele halte par a fi avut în trecut și clădiri (erau stații în toată regula, nu halte), dar acum sunt dezafectate: fără ușă, geamuri, pline de nisip și alte materiale sau gunoaie.

As I haven’t done this since a long time ago :-), today I have cleaned my office, including my notebook, PDA, and phone (and their screens too). I’ve done that before without any issues (except the lazyness), but today I noticed a semi-transparent-white pretty-much triangular spot on the notebook LCD, visible especially when bright colors were shown on that area of the screen (when the screen was off, it was hardly notifiable).

As it was semi-transparent I knew it couldn’t be dead pixels, but still, I was a little concerned that maybe some of the cleaning liquid has ended where it shouldn’t have, and I was worried about my future: would I need to buy another notebook already (and should/could I resist until Windows 7 :-))?

But afterwards, after shutting down the computer and running my wife’s hair dryer a little (10 minutes) around the specific area of the screen the spot dissapeared. Windows 7 can wait! :-)

Începând din 4 iunie 2009 cei care lucrează la situl Web BNR au modificat modul în care fișierele cu extensie XML sunt descărcate/vizualizate: înainte de această dată accesul la datele referitoare la cursul valutar se făcea prin simpla accesare a XML-ului de la adresa http://www.bnro.ro/nbrfxrates.xml, însă odată cu modificarea survenită (undeva la nivelul setărilor MIME types de pe serverul respectiv) URL-ul nu mai oferă conțintul XML direct, ci doar ca fișier atașat, putând fi descărcat/vizualizat abia după alegerea opțiunii Open sau Save dintr-o fereastră de dialog afișată de către browser. Aceasta nu e o problemă majoră dacă o persoană încearcă accesarea XML-ului manual, dar construcțiile programatice tip XML.Load(url) nu mai funcționează corect. Cea mai simplă soluție de rezolvare ar fi ca cei de la BNR să rezolve problema, revenind la setările anterioare.

Actualizare: După am scris (de două ori) despre acest lucru webmaster-ului sitului (vineri și azi) se pare că problema s-a rezolvat (destul de prompt, aș putea adăuga)!

Actualizare: În final însă, din păcate, s-au decis pentru metoda attachment, în loc de inline, așadar iarăși nu merge. Trebuie să găsim o altă soluție pentru rezolvare.

Vă invit să votați Parcul Național Retezat din România și/sau Fluviul Dunărea pe situl oficial New7Wonders (Noile 7 minuni ale lumii), secțiunea Natură. Aveți 7 voturi la dispoziție, câte unul pentru fiecare dintre cele 7 feluri de minuni naturale. Parcul Național Retezat este participant în grupa E (Păduri, parcuri naționale, rezervații naturale), iar Dunărea în grupa F (Lacuri, râuri, cascade). Aici sunt afișate toate nominalizările Europene (dar puteți utiliza legăturile Preview sau Next și pentru a vizualiza alte continente).

Puteți vota în această etapă (a nominalizărilor, respectiv determinarea topului 77, respectiv câte 11 participante din fiecare grupă) numai până pe 7 iulie 2009. Momentan Retezat-ul este pe locul 14 în grupa E, iar Dunărea pe locul 13 în grupa F, așadar votați! Nu ar mai trebui decât un pic de efort să intre în primii 11 clasați și să aibă o șansă în faza a doua (a alegerii topului 21 de către experți). Faza a treia se va desfășura apoi în următorii 2 ani, pentru alegerea definitivă a noilor 7 minuni ale naturii. Mai multe informații despre desfășurarea votului sunt disponibile pe sit.

Tocmai am găsit, frunzărind păiajenul (Web-ul) :-) câteva articole (eu le-am numit povestiri) scrise de fratele meu Ovidiu. Au legătură cu universul, cu fizica și cu filosofia. Sunt doar 3 (deocamdată) și au fost scrise prin 2006, dar sunt interesante, vă invit să le citiți și voi!

Am vrut să vizităm astăzi interiorul Casei Matei Corvin, dar o persoană care nu s-a prezentat (nici măcar la cererea noastră) care vindea obiecte de artizanat la o tarabă din vecinătate ne-a oprit, spunându-ne că nu putem intra, deși nu a indicat (nici măcar la cererea noastră) vreun motiv, amenințând cu chemarea poliției și folosind apelativul “obraznici” deși noi i-am vorbit cuviincios!

Cred că era bine (dacă am fi avut mai mult timp) să accepăm și să cerem la rândul nostru, în mod imperativ, venirea organelor abilitate, măcar pentru a identifica persoana respectivă (o fi fost portarul? ori poate vreun prieten al portarului, portarul fiind temporar plecat, deși nu ar fi avut voie? I-am facut o fotografie, evenimentul producându-se în spațiul public, vedeți mai jos. Dacă îl cunoașteți, spuneți-ne și nouă, într-un comentariu, măcar pentru a ști cu cine am discutat!)

Am decis să reclamăm oricum problema și la Primărie și la Universitatea de Artă și Design pentru că imaginea turistică a orașului nostru este deteriorată prin apariția unor astfel de evenimente nedorite ce ar putea fi evitate foarte simplu prin angajarea unui portar cu comportament responsabil, care ar ști cel puțin să-și declare identitatea și funcția atunci când intervine în discuție cu vizitatorii și să specifice motivele pentru care vizitele nu sunt permise, ori să se renunțe la plăcuțele din oraș care indică turiștilor acest obiectiv (care, după cum se pare, devine de evitat!)
